The friendship paradox, built by hand

Ten people, and you decide who knows whom. Two numbers are kept side by side: how many friends the average person has, and how many friends the average friend has. The second is never smaller. Your job is to find out when it is equal, and how far apart you can drive them.

• The average person counts every one of the ten, once each.
• The average friend counts every person once for each friend they have — which is exactly what happens when you ask people about their friends.
